The important role that recreation plays in the vibrant quality of life offered in the City of New Ulm is evidenced on the ballot this November 2016 with the Reinvest in New Ulm (RENU) initiative. An extension of a half-percent sales tax would fund projects to improve and expand recreation facilities in the city and demonstrate the community’s dedication to providing not only residents, but neighboring Southern Minnesota communities, with a prime destination for leisure, sports and wellness activities.

New Ulm Contains a Plethora of Parks

For a city of about 15,000 people, New Ulm already has a plethora of parks. At over 26 locations, people have the opportunity to play baseball, softball, skate board, play Frisbee golf, horseshoes, sand volleyball, hike along nature trails, and paddle in wading pools. There are also historic sites to visit and many areas where playground equipment and open spaces are prime locations for picnics and play.

Thriveon employee, Jesse Zahrt, enjoys play time in the parks with his two young daughters. “The New Ulm parks are amazing,” he says. “My family is blessed to have so many parks in our town. The variety and ease of access to these parks keeps it fun for the kids because there are so many to choose from.”

Access to Athletics and Arts Programs

While Jesse’s young children might sometimes prefer to climb around a pirate ship structure or zip down slides, they also have a rich assortment of athletics and arts programs to access through the New Ulm Park and Recreation department. The Civic Center, Community Center and Recreation Center, provide facilities for swimming, fitness, athletics, ice skating, hockey, special events, and classes that nurture health and wellness for people of all ages while providing social and cultural benefits.

Family Friendly Quality of Life

Thriveon’s headquarters in New Ulm offers employees close proximity to amenities such as the city’s parks and recreation activities that provide a rich quality of life. Being family friendly means many things – having a health work-life balance; having the flexibility that is needed to attend to family obligations. Sometimes it just means having the programs and places available where families can learn, grow and have fun together.
