Effective communication and seamless collaboration are crucial for businesses to thrive in today’s fast-paced world. Microsoft Teams announced on March 27 that a new Microsoft Teams desktop app is available. The new app is all about speed, performance and flexibility, making it more straightforward to use and find all your tools in one place. These updates and enhancements to the already powerful collaboration tool can help revolutionize your workplace.

Speed

Microsoft overhauled the Teams platform to optimize its data, network, chat and video architecture. On average, a user switches 10,000 times a month between chats, channels and activities. Its biggest accomplishment was making it twice as fast while using half the system resources, so you don’t have to wait for the content to load. This helps lower shimmering and reduce wait times while also enabling faster app responses to your actions, which saves time and allows you to collaborate more efficiently.

After partnering with benchmarking firm GigaOm to quantify performance gains, Teams discovered that users:

  • Installed the app up to three times faster
  • Launched the app up to two times faster
  • Joined meetings up to two times faster
  • Switched chats/channels up to 1.75 times faster
  • Consumed up to 50% less memory
  • Consumed up to 70% less disk space

Performance

The new Teams app focuses on providing a simple yet more polished and responsive feature-rich experience for users that’s easier to navigate and accomplish more. The enhancements to the core Teams experience make it easier to:

  • Stay on top of notifications
  • Search for information
  • Manage messages
  • Organize channels

Threaded conversations, customizable group chats and interactive emojis also enhance the personalized experience, making communication more engaging and enjoyable. For meetings, Teams updated the pre-join experience, gallery view and screen-sharing ability.

Flexibility

The new Teams app is designed to cater to the customers’ needs with multiple users and accounts. Microsoft improved the authentication model, synchronization and notification system to provide a seamless, consistent experience. Users can now stay signed into all accounts, so they don’t have to log in and out, which interrupts workflow constantly. They can also receive real-time notifications, no matter which account they’re currently using, ensuring that you never miss essential updates.

The new Teams app also focuses on securing business data from cyber attacks by developing solutions that help prevent, detect and respond to these attacks. The new security measures include adopting Trusted Types and implementing a more stringent Content Security Policy, which ensures that Teams remains a reliable, secure platform for businesses to collaborate and share sensitive information.

Teams is also working on adding these new features to the app:

  • MAC, VDI, EDU and web platforms
  • Special clouds (GCC, GCC-High, DoD)
  • Advanced calling features (call queues and reverse number lookup)
  • Advanced meeting features (breakout rooms and 7x7 video)
  • Teams and channel creation, cross-posting, channel announcements
  • Search in chats and channels
  • 3rd party apps and Line of Business apps
